The Archins, Arshishtu, or Archi (these last two are of self-designation), are the native population of Daghestan. They live in the Hatar River basin. Besides the Archin language, Avars, Russian, and Lak are also well spread.

The ethnic history of the Archins is closely connected with ethnogenesis of the Daghestan people. The main occupations of the latter were cattle breeding and agriculture, just as of the Archins. The production of woolen weaving, carpet producing, and carving were highly developed. Their houses were one-, two- or of many stories with flat roofs.

As far as national clothing are connected, they have much in common with the Avars. The traditional element of men’s dress was a furcoat in cloak style and papakha. The women wore special headdressing with silver decorations, a shawl, straight long trousers, and belts of different colors.

The Archins believers are Muslims-Sunnites.
