The Lak (Lakzs) are one of the most ancient peoples of Daghestan. The majority of the population lives in the mountain parts of Daghestan mainly in Lak and Kulgensk districts; while the rest of them live on the plains of Northern Daghestan in Novolak district.

By their material as well as spiritual culture the Lak are close to other peoples of Daghestan. The national language of these people is one of the literary languages of Daghestan. It is based on the Kumyk dialect.

Mountain Lak are cattle-breeders specializing in raising sheep; those living on the plains work in agriculture.

Leather, ceramic and jewelry items are manufactured in Lak settlements. They also produce canvas, felt and woolen goods.

Lak believers are Islam Sunnites.
