The Kumyk are the people inhabiting mostly plains and partially foot-hills of Daghestan.

The ethnogenesis of the Kumyk incorporates ancient tribes of the Northeastern Daghestan and the newly come Turkic-speaking tribes, mainly the Kypchak whose language was adopted by local peoples.

Anthropologically and culturally, art, music and folklore have gained new force in their development.

Kumyk believers are Islam-Sunnites.
