The Mishars are an ethnic group of the Tatars. They call themselves “the Tatars.” The Mishars live on the left and right banks of the Middle Volga River mainly in Tatarstan and also in Bashkortostan where they are known as the “Meshcheryak.” They speak one of the dialects of the Tatar language. The origin and descent of the Meshcheryak are unknown. Most of the scientists suggest that they are the descendants of the Meshchera people who underwent the Turkization process.

Mishar culture is almost the same as the culture of the main Tatars.
