Handicrafts are of considerable importance in the life of the Rutul people living in mountains. The women weave beautiful carpets and produce knitwear decorated with traditional patterns; while the men are known as skillful stone and wood carvers. They usually decorate their homes, household utensils, and tombs with the stone and wood carvings.

Rutul believers are of the Islam-Sunnite faith.
